Map of Aughinish Island
2019, 39.5”x31.5”
graphite
By the time I drew the island I knew it’s shape by heart. With a little map research and because I had walked the island many, many times, it was easy to draw the land divisions, roads, beaches and hedges. This drawing is now a personal historical document.

Whitethorn Project Poster
2020, 30”x42”

This is my most recent piece and represents a segue into more local work. The Whitethorn Project and all the knowledge accrued during it is directly responsible for my current interest in human impact on landscape and how things that look like nature are complicated.

Wrack: Brown Algae Form Key
2016, 30 “x42”
collage, watercolor
Brown Algae is one of the more common and certainly the most shapely of seaweeds found on the beaches on Aughinish Island. One summer I did 100 small studies of long strands of brown algae, brought them back to Virginia and extracted these shapes.

Whitethorn Branch-making Kit
2018, 16”x16x5””
wood, color key cards for twig, leaf, blossom, watercolor, brushes, pencil, 9 custom rubber relief stamps, ink pads, paper
Once I had made a huge number of custom rubber stamps, it occurred to me that I could make a simplified kit with form and color components that would allow others to make their own Whitethorn branches.

Whitethorn (Crataegus) and Bramble (Rubus) Key
2016, 30”x42”
custom rubber relief stamps, watercolor, collage
This key represents the first flush of custom rubber relief stamps that I made for bramble and Whitethorn. I learned to use the stamps and experimented with color and then organized the results in this key.

10 Variations of a Flattened, Old Whitethorn Blossom
2016, 7”x10” each
collage, watercolor, ink, custom rubber relief stamps
These drawings were made in one sitting on the first day of 2016 in my studio in Virginia. This decades-old whitethorn sample arrived through the mail, as flat and brittle as an old piece of paper. I stopped drawing when a breeze from the open door blew it apart.

2018, 5.5”x20” each

After producing the 150 custom rubber relief stamps from drawings, I used them to make these 60 or so studies of Whitethorn branches. Most of these were taken from life but a few were just imagined after long observation.

At home in Virginia, these informal multi-media posters literally and visually collected my thoughts about the progress of the Whitethorn project over months; often something other than the Whitethorn project crept in.

Brown Algae is one of the more common and certainly the most shapely of seaweeds found on the beaches on Aughinish Island. One summer I did 100 small studies of long strands of brown algae, brought them back to Virginia and extracted these shapes.
